Nature, adventure, and an excellent reminder that you probably don't need all the stuff you own.

One of the biggest reasons I love Costa Rica is the plants and animals. I have a serious love affair with tropical plants, and Costa Rica is basically their dream home. While you'll find beautiful luxury hotels, hot springs, and plenty of creature comforts, much of the country remains wonderfully rugged and wild.

And when I say wild, I mean it. During the rainy season, heavy rainfall can trigger mudslides and road closures, which can completely derail an itinerary if you're not prepared. This is one of those destinations where having someone who understands the logistics can make a very big difference.

Come for the nature, stay for the adventure

Arenal Waterfall is a must-see, even if your legs aren't thrilled about the roughly 500 steps to get there. The fact that I had better Wi-Fi at the bottom of those stairs than I do at my home in Philly is... honestly impressive.

If adventure is your love language, you'll have a hard time choosing between zip-lining through the rainforest, white-water rafting, ATV rides, and hiking. Prefer your adventures with a little more sand? Costa Rica's Pacific coast is famous for its surf, beaches, and laid-back coastal towns.

And then there are the animals. I'm not a bird watcher—even though I am a millennial—but Costa Rica almost convinced me to become one. The sheer number of species and the ridiculous variety of colors and feathers are enough to make anyone stop and stare.

Even just driving between destinations can feel like a safari. You'll pass fields of pineapple, cacao, and coffee plants, along with cows, monkeys, and—if you're lucky—a sloth or scarlet macaw casually making your day.

The Pura Vida mindset

One of the things that stayed with me most was Costa Rica's emphasis on living alongside and protecting nature. It's a philosophy that really resonates with me and my own desire to live more consciously and thoughtfully. That even in hard times, you can live happily; it’s the Pura Vida way.

I left Costa Rica feeling renewed and hopeful—with a deeper appreciation for ecosystems, wildlife, and the possibility of living with a little less. Turns out, I can survive without most of the things I own. Just need some good Wi-Fi.

Costa Rica isn't necessarily a "cheap" destination. Its combination of eco-lodges, adventure activities, private transportation, and luxury resorts can add up quickly—but there are plenty of ways to build an incredible trip at different price points.
