THAILAND
Avatar-like mountains, golden temples, tropical beaches, and fried chicken for breakfast. What more could you want?
Thailand is a breath of fresh air—and only a slightly longer breath when you're dealing with an 11-hour time difference from home. Staying in touch with everyone back home can be a challenge, but once you're surrounded by Thailand's landscapes, food, and energy, you'll probably be too busy exploring to care.
From jungle-covered mountains and turquoise beaches to the organized chaos of Bangkok, Thailand somehow manages to blend the ancient and modern everywhere you look. Temples, statues, shrines, monks, skyscrapers, flowers, street food, and beaches all exist side by side.
Ancient traditions, endless adventure
Thailand is an incredible country to experience because there's history and entertainment almost everywhere you turn. The temples and landmarks can be genuinely awe-inspiring. Standing beneath the enormous Big Buddha or exploring ancient temple complexes has a way of making you feel very, very small.
And then there are the festivals.
I was lucky enough to plan my trip around Songkran, Thailand's water festival, which meant I got to experience the celebration in a slightly less traditional way—with a water gun in hand and an enthusiastic stranger hosing me down while I rode through the streets on the back of a motorbike taxi.
Completely chaotic. Completely soaked. Absolutely worth it.
Thailand's festivals are one of the best ways to experience the country's culture because you're not simply watching a tradition—you get to be part of it.
Come hungry
One of my favorite things about Thailand is how food is woven into everyday life. Breakfast doesn't have to mean pancakes or eggs, lunch doesn't have to mean a sandwich, and dinner doesn't have to be the biggest meal of the day. Food is food, no matter what the clock says.
And yes, fried chicken can absolutely happen at breakfast. I fully support this.
Thailand's markets are an adventure of their own. One of the world's largest open-air markets was so enormous that I genuinely thought I was simply crossing a street to reach another section of vendors. Between the food, clothing, souvenirs, crafts, and everything else you didn't know you needed, it's very easy to lose track of time—and possibly your travel companion.
Little discoveries, big impact
One experience that really stayed with me was stumbling upon a pop-up event dedicated to reducing plastic use and promoting sustainable, reusable living. Vendors served food without single-use plastic, and instead of throwing away plates, cups, and utensils, everyone washed and reused them at a communal station. Some foods were wrapped in banana leaves, and a towering art installation made almost entirely from discarded plastic bags stood over the event.
It was a fascinating reminder that sustainability doesn't always have to look high-tech. Sometimes it's simply about washing the plate and using it again.
Old meets new
That's the beauty of Thailand: you don't really have to choose.
You can spend a few days navigating Bangkok's skyscrapers, temples, markets, and street food before heading south to Phuket for beaches and island adventures. Or trade the crowds for jungle-covered mountains, quiet villages, and landscapes that look suspiciously like something from Avatar.
And after a long day of exploring? Get a massage.
Actually, get a massage every day.
They're wonderfully affordable, and after a long day of exploring, your feet will be begging for one.
Thailand is a place where old traditions and modern life aren't competing with each other—they're happening simultaneously. That's what makes it such a fascinating place to experience.

Good to know
Thailand offers fantastic value once you arrive, particularly for food, massages, transportation, and activities. However, popular islands such as Phuket and Koh Samui can cost significantly more than destinations like Chiang Mai or northern Thailand.
